As a parent of a dependent undergraduate student, you can apply for the Direct PLUS loan. These federal funds can assist with paying for your student’s educational costs such as tuition and fees, housing and meals and other college expenses such as books and supplies.

To apply, sign in with your FSA ID and password to the Federal Student Aid website.

The credit check is processed at the end of the application, and you will know immediately if you have been approved or denied. If approved, the Master Promissory Note (loan agreement) must also be signed. With an approved application and MPN on file, the funds will be automatically applied to your student's costs at Pacific.

If denied, there are still other options to consider such as an appeal, moving forward with an endorser (co-signer) or an increase of $4,000 to $5,000 for your student's unsubsidized loan.

Here are some tips to help you fill out the application correctly from start to finish:

Award Year 2023-24
The PLUS loan application is completed prior to the start of each year.

How much do you want to borrow?

  • Maximum - this will allow the loan to cover the remaining cost of attendance after your student's aid is applied.
  • Specify a loan amount - enter a specific dollar amount you wish to borrow.
  • I don’t know - The Office of Financial Aid will follow up with you to confirm the amount. It is recommended to have an amount determined prior to the application.

Loan Period
August 2023 to May 2024 - this will allow the loan to cover the entire academic year.

Payment Deferral

  • Defer repayment - payments can be paused while your student is enrolled
  • Defer repayment for 6 months - additional grace period before repayment begins

Credit Balance
Any excess funds after the bill is paid can be issued to you as the parent or directly to your student.

Hi Stephanie. Once your son is admitted to Pacific, we'll review his financial aid application. If you don't think the award you received will cover everything, you can file for a parent loan at that time.

Hi! How long does it usually take the school to contact Federal Student Aid after we have been approved for a Parent PLUS loan?
