Applying for financial aid to help pay for college expenses is a crucial step in your student’s journey to a college education. It starts with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as the FAFSA. Your student needs to submit it to be considered for financial aid from federal, state and institutional resources for the next school year.
The FAFSA opens Saturday, October 1. It can be accessed through the Federal Government’s student aid page.
Consider setting aside some time to help your student complete the 2023-24 application. If you are a first-time applicant, you will need to create an FSA ID (user name and password). You can begin this step now to help streamline the process before the FAFSA opens.
Creating an FSA ID
Your student will need an FSA ID to start the FAFSA. You as a parent or guardian will need an FSA ID to officially sign the FAFSA at the end. To accomplish that, you will need your social security numbers and an email address or a mobile phone number. Visit the launch page for Federal Student Aid to create an account.
